Finally some good analytics

I have to admit that until last
week I had no idea what visitors did when they arrived to
Habitamos.com. I could guess… yes but that was a cowboy approach of
managing the site. I tried all the free web stats services in the
market: Webtrends, Indextools, Statcounter, Extreme, etc.. but
eventually either the trial period finished or we got kicked out for
consuming too many page views.

Last week Google launched their Analytics services
as many of you know. I think its an amazing software and hopefully will
prove very useful to us when we start next year with PPC marketing
campaigns.

The only problem I have is regarding the
confidentiality of the data. I don’t feel comfortable with Google
having access to our conversion ratios and sales figures. Google have
declined that they will use the data to better understand how much you
are willing to pay for ads, based on conversions. They also claim that
they do not plan to tap into the data as a means of improving regular
search results or to identify bad sites. Nevertheless, these things are
easily possible if you use Google Analytics.

We are installing a new database server

I’ve been so busy these past few weeks that I’ve completely abandoned the blog…

This
weekend we are installing a new database server and hopefully things
will speed up. Right now (at 7 o’clock GTM+1) ADOOS servers are at
hitting the 100% CPU limit!

The new machine
is an IBM x346 with RAID 5 and 2 Intel CPUs (3GHz I think). We are
migrating to Debian with MySQL 4 to take advantage of the new search
functions of MySQL (before we were using Red Hat 7.2 with MySQL 3). We
are now going to start using RAID 5 to store the data and this gives me
some peace of mind as I will not have to backup the photos so often.
RAID 5 has fault tolerance to a single HD failure.

Having
two CPUs will also enables us to launch a pay-per-click (PPC) bidding
services for advertisers that want to pay a little bit extra to receive
more visibility. The bid calculations are very CPU intensive!

Here is a picture of the server:

Hitting the CPU limit!

Hmm.. I am a bit worried about the CPU usage on the MySQL database!
It seems that the new sites have doubled the server traffic and the
processor load is now close to 95% during peak hours.

The
problem is that we are caching absolutely everything the only way to
scale now is by duplicating the database with a master-slave db
structure! This is something that I have been avoiding for a long time,
but it seems that there is no other option now. Time to pull the
sleeves up and do some hardcore DB programming -)

New Email Ticketing System

This week we have finally
launched a new internal email ticketing intranet to help us manage all
email communication better. It has not been an easy implementation,
especially because the system has to operate multi-language,
multi-country and multi-role functions.

The fact is that our
internal email system was a bit of a mess lately with too many emails
lying around peoples Outlook inbox and no way of auditing the quality
of the replies. Hopefully the new system is going to help us manage all
communication centrally and more effectively. It will be possible to respond to your email enquiries in less than 24hours.
