Unique Visitors by Country

Here are the latest visitor numbers for February 2006, split by
country. These numbers are about 10% lower than I expected, but
February is a shorter month.

Adoos Beta Launch
Over the past four months we have been experimenting with the new Adoos
international sites. We always try to launch sites as soon as possible,
even before they are finished! This provides us with immediate
invaluable user feedback and we get a chance to find out what works and
what doesn’t. Then the development team rectifies settings and
architecture before officially launching at a later stage.

We are now close to finishing the beta international sites.

Adoos  international will officially roll-out MAY 2006!

My New FON Router

Today, I received my new FON enabled router.

The
first thing I noticed is that the router is only a router (obviously).
But for some reason I was expecting the router to also include the ADSL
modem! It doesn’t so I’ve had to chain it behind my other linksys
router which includes modem…. awkward setting though.

I haven’t managed to get it working today but I will try again tomorrow.
I am off to bed.

Snowing last night in Madrid!

We came out of Pacha at 6 am and the whole city street was white.
Here are a few pictures I took with my mobile phone, unfortunately the
quality is not very good.

It rarely snows like this in Madrid!

Localising Adoos in Latin America

Getting the Latin American sites
up and running has been a bit trickier than we initially expected.
Spanish is a fairly homogeneous language throughout the region but
unfortunately when it comes really local stuff, there are slight
idiomatic differences. In the case of a classifieds, getting these
differences right is crucial for the success of the sites.

Here are some examples:

1) The word Car is different:
Spain: Coches
Venezuela: Carros
Argentina: Autos

2) When talking about property, people use the following:
Spain:  Dormitorios
Mexico: Recamaras
Argentina: Ambientes

Other important differences include:
Departamentos vs. Pisos
Bienes Raices vs. Inmuebles
Celulares vc. Moviles
Computadora vs. Ordenadores
Avisos vs. Anuncios

Then, in some countries you also get strange currency issues. For example in Argentina property for sale is generally quoted in USD but property for rent in Pesos. The same goes for electronic gadgets and computers that are also quoted in USD!

This is the reason why the Adoos sites are still in ALPHA, because we are working to get all these glitches fixed before launching with the full marketing campaigns.

To
everyone that reads my blog from Latin America, please send me an email
and let me know if we need to correct any mistake with your country’s
website.

Public WiFi coming to London

Some fantastic news for London!

The
City of London has just announced a plan to blanket the London
financial district with WiFi. The plan is to start with a section of
London’s Square Mile financial district, and then to roll out WiFi
coverage to the entire area over the course of the next six months.

70,000 Active Ads

Today, Habitamos.com has reached a record of 70,000 active ads! We have doubled our marketing efforts this month and we are now receiving an average of 2,000 new ads per day. Most ads are mainly in the property, cars and jobs sections .

This number is greater than any vertical classifieds website in Spain and we are catching up with the horizontal local leader (Trader’s Segundamano).

Thanks you all for using our service.
We are working hard to keep growing the community!

Rolling Stones in Rio de Janeiro

Now this is a concert! Impressive picture from yesterdays Rolling
Stones concert in Copacabana beach, 1.2 million people! I am envious of
not being there.

I have to bin my car

Today I have found out that unfortunately its too expensive to fix
my broken car. I took it to the garage a couple of weeks ago to get the
motor fixed because it was making a really loud sound.

I called up the garage today and apparently they tell me that I have to replace the gearbox and the clutch. They are quoting 2,500 Euros to fix it!! What!!?
I precisely bought a Seat Ibiza thinking that it was the cheapest car to maintain and fix in Spain, apparently not!

Going
to the garage is one of those moments in life when I really feel like a
fool! I have no idea about cars or mechanical engineering and I have no
way to tell if the guy is talking nonsense or not. Anyway, I’m going to
take the car to another garage and see if he gives me a better quote.
If not, c’est la vie, I am going to have to retire my baby.  (I paid for it 2,500 Euros secondhand 18 months ago).

Microsoft Office Live Beta

Today Microsoft released a new service called Office Live.  I have tried to register but it seems that the service is only available in the US for the moment.

Office
Live is not a hosted version of Microsoft Office but a web suite of
applications and services targeting small businesses needs.

Here are the main features:
* Basic e-mail and calendaring.
* Collaboration functions.
* Project management functionality.
* Domain name and Web site.
* Document management tools
* Customer relationship tools

If
think this looks like a great product. At Adoos we would seriously
benefit from better internal email system, calendaring and better
project management intranet. If the product is good we will
definitively pay $29,95/month for it.
